Update on my crazy experiment called film

I just wanted to share a few things about how my film experiment is going. My Mamiya 645 is being repaired right now (like for the last month), so Niall McCarthy let me borrow his Pentax camera. Not sure what type of Pentax camera it is…but it’s a beast. Full steel, weighs about 15 pounds, 10 shots per roll and the shutter is so loud you can hear it from a few rooms over. But since I need an excuse to work my arms out more, I’ve been taking it with me to a few weddings and engagement shoots. When a couple gives me time (like with Jessica + Josh), I pull out the film camera and shoot a few frames here and there. Film has this great way of processing light…even light that I might consider “bad” for my digital cameras. I’m still surprised every time I get my scans back…It’s like I’m an actual photographer or something.

Shooting with a film camera that only has 10 shots per roll is really making me take my time. Seriously. I love the look of film, but I don’t think I could ever make the full transition. I could shoot a full engagement sessions in film, but an actual wedding day might put me in the crazy house.  Complete with a stuffed doll and padded walls. A roll of Portra or Fuji 400 costs around $7 just for the film and about $18 to get it developed. You have to be in a completely different mind-set for film because each shot costs you around $2.50.

I’m also using Indie Film Lab to do my processing…I switched because Ashley Goodwin twisted my arm. 😉

Very soon you guys will see a full blog post for Jessica + Josh’s Wedding. They are the type of couple that makes my heart pitter-patter. They let me have plenty of time for photos and transformed a city park into something forest-like. Couples that put more creativity and hard work into their wedding are rockstars. Hands down.
