I just got my two rolls of film back from Jenna and Matt’s engagement session, and I wanted to share the beauty. 🙂 As always, I shot one roll with my Mamiya 645 (Fuji 400) and one roll with my 35 Nikon. Even though it’s harder to shoot with my Mamiya, I think I might put my Nikon film camera to rest…since my little monster (Mamiya) makes my heart swoon with every shot.
Jenna and Matt totally made it easier for me! First off, they were super excited I brought film with me…and second they stayed really still for me and laughed along with me every time I forgot to advance the film. That and they ignored my funny-thinking-faces when I was changing my settings. I luves them.
Things I’m learning about film:
- I love it.
- Even though I get only 14 shots per roll, my success rate is around 90%. I just have to shoot slowly.
- Color film makes my heart swoon.
- I really like Fuji better than Portra.
- I don’t like black and white film that much. Or I have to learn how to shoot it better.
- I can’t shoot at 1.8 …my eyes can’t see focus at that point. 2.8 is much better.
- Richard Photo lab gives me chills, they get the color scary-close to my digital files.
- I’m actually pretty good at using a camera without a light meter…as long as I’m shooting during golden-hour.
- Film is a lot better than digital when it comes to shooting into the sun…but since my style has worked around the digital limitations, I still don’t like to shoot into the sun.

Beautiful job!! Your getting so good with film, can hardly tell the difference!
These look so great!!! 🙂 Keep it up! 🙂
These are gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous! I agree, film ROCKS shooting into the sun! Keep on going!
And can I admire/giggle at the cans on a string? I just met a new friend (who moved here from San Diego) and she and I fell in love with each other. Marshall the other night said “Are you going to text Marissa goodnight?” I was like “NO! Shesh!!” The he said “Are yall going to get cans and attach yarn and string them across the island so ya’ll can talk all the time??” and the visual gave me the giggles, so this really made me smile. 🙂
Love this post, Candice! I agree about the black and white film outside, I don’t like it as much either – I haven’t quite figured out how to shoot it in a way that I love it outdoors yet. I agree – LOVE color! These are just SO beautiful, I am SO excited to see more of your film!!! 🙂
Amazing, Candice!
I so want to learn how to shoot film ! 🙂
