So to lay it all down…I’m crazy obsessed with the look of film.
In college I took one black and white photography class…learned how to load the film, shoot (badly) and develop the film myself. I dont know how I passed the class…oh thats right…I didnt.
How ironic. A photographer that failed the only photography class she ever took.
For the past few months I’ve been toying with the idea of trying to shoot film again. When I was in Hawaii I brought my old Minolta camera, cheap Kodak film and carried it with me everywhere. After getting the film processed at CVS I was surprised that I actually had photos turn out. And some of the photos looked better than I remember it looking in real life. It kinda freaked me out. I could see the blue water and sun filled blue sky….I could see the details in the shadows and also see the light in the trees. After shooting digital for so long you forget how much film can actually capture.
Since then my mild love has became an unnatural obsession. I’ve given myself the goal of learning film, slowing down and taking a step back. I’ve read every film e-book I can get into my ipad, borrowed film cameras and tried to shoot a few frames of film at every engagement session or wedding I’ve shot in the last few months.
And yesterday I just jumped in. My friend Niall and I took a couple to San Juan Capistrano and I shot 95% film. I fumbled with loading 120 film into a Mamiya, realized that it was impossible to use that camera with just one hand, cried a little bit when I realized I was shooting wrong, learned that I had to use my pinky to snap a frame (uncomfortable much?) and realized that if I don’t take a moment to breath and check my settings the whole shot can be for nothing. It was an amazing learning experience.
I’m sending the film in today. Lets see what I get.

Can’t wait to see!! I’m sure you guys rocked it out! <3
I LOVED my black and white film class. I didn’t get many opportunities to shoot the kind of shots I really wanted to, but I loved it all the same. I’d love to continue shooting film, but without a dark room of my own, I’ve given up the thought. To put so much care into taking the pictures and then hand the film over to someone else to process and print just freaks me out. But I hope you get some really great stuff and I can’t wait to see!
