Lately, for some reason I’ve been dealing with really tough lighting conditions. Like dark churches, hurricane-like-rains, orange florescent light and bright sun with strips of shadows. I will go from one tough light and jump into another. For some reason that has also been combined with cut portrait time on the wedding day. To be real: it sucks. Lately, when someone only has 45 minutes scheduled for photos…most of the time it turns into to be 10-20 minutes max. If a wedding day runs late (9 times out of 10)…the first thing people cut out is the photos.
And that makes my insides sad.
It’s almost impossible to get a variety of photos in a 20 minute period. It usually takes most couples at least 15 minutes to warm up for the camera. If there’s anything I want people to learn from my rambling, it’s this: if you want amazing photos, you have to put the time into it. Especially if it’s not the golden hour. It takes even longer to find flattering places to shoot if the light isn’t ideal.
Anyways, since this has been happening more and more, I started to feel a little crazy…and needed to use my camera in nice light. (Without a flash or without pushing my ISO over 1200.) I was craving golden light so much I almost hugged a person wearing a Funshine Carebear t-shirt yesterday. For reals. I was one step away from the crazy-home.
Luckily, my really good friend Sam helped me out of my mild breakdown and we ran around in the last 45 minutes sunset. Sam is a film editor, so we played around with a vintage camera and a few books to make her look “scholarly”. She also acted like a Raptor and chased ducks…but that’s besides the point. 🙂
I also shot a few rolls of film durring the session, so when that gets back from the lab I will be sure to share it as well!
